Description
The Greenlow Head farmhouse dates from the mid-17th century, with later alterations. It is constructed of squared and coursed rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings, and has a clay tile roof with coped verges, kneelers, and integral end stacks – one of brick, the other of ashlar with two shafts of circular section. The building has a T-shaped plan, consisting of a main two-room range with a central through-passage, and a three-bay service wing to the rear. Stairs are located within the rear wing.
The farmhouse is two storeys and an attic, with two windows on each floor. The windows are small-pane glazing bar sashes with straight hood moulds and rebated surrounds. Ground floor windows are of two lights, each with a central chamfered mullion. Ground and first floor windows have been enlarged by lowering the sills. A partly blocked cellar window is located on the left-hand side. A central half-glazed door features a moulded surround and straight hood mould. The central attic gable has a decorative lozenge light with a hood mould and raised decoration, topped by a finial. A small circular opening is present on the left-hand (south) gable above a single-light attic window, which also has a hood mould. The right-hand (north) gable has one blocked window on each floor, with the first and second floor retaining hood moulds.
The rear wing’s north side has three windows with rebated surrounds to the ground floor, including a small, possible fire window on the left. The centre and right-hand ground floor windows have straight hood moulds. Four blocked first floor windows are grouped towards the right, the rightmost retaining a straight hood mould. A brick stack is located to the left of centre. The gable end of the rear wing features a reset window head and hood mould to the ground floor left, and a centrally placed blocked attic window with a straight hood mould and decorative lozenge light above.
Inside, the first-floor rooms of the rear range have exposed ceiling beams with wide chamfers and run-out stops. The first floor of the main range's right-hand room has collapsed. The roof structure includes collar and tie beam roofs with double trenched purlins, straight wind braces, and a ridge piece, with angle struts between the tie beam and principal rafters. The roofs of the rear range also feature queen struts.
