Description

Coxen Green Farmhouse is a mid-17th century farmhouse constructed from coursed and squared limestone rubble, featuring ashlar quoins and dressings. The building has clay tile roofs with coped verges and integral coursed rubble end stacks. It has an L-shaped plan with a main range and a rear wing. The entrance to the hall is at the gable end, with a separate access from the hall to the parlour, which contains the central staircase, and to a narrow pantry. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has two windows; the mullioned windows include a ground floor window on the right with three lights and others with two lights. The left ground floor window retains a 17th-century rebated surround and chamfered mullion, while the remaining windows, likely from the 18th century, have plain mullions. The rear wing features casement windows. A square-headed doorway on the north gable end has a heavily weathered ovolo moulded surround and an indecipherable date carved on the lintel. Inside, there is a massive mantle beam over a now disused inglenook or fire bay in the hall. The straight staircase in the parlour leads to the first floor, which retains two early 19th-century fireplaces with foliage decorations. The simple roof consists of purlins supported by external and partition walls.
