Description

The Mermaid Inn is an early 19th-century house, now an inn. It is constructed of coursed and squared gritstone rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings, topped with a clay tile roof featuring coped verges and ashlar ridge stacks. The building follows a U-shaped plan, with gabled wings to the left and right, which flank a deeply recessed central range. The gables each have a first-floor square shuttered opening, possibly former pitching holes. The central range has mullioned windows; these are mostly 3-light, with the exception of the first-floor centre window, which is 2-light. The mullions contain plate glass sash windows with horns. A sill band runs along the first-floor windows and continues on the inside faces of the wings. A central porch has a hipped roof and a 2-light casement window.
