Description
The milepost near Upper Hulme is an early 19th-century marker made of painted cast iron. It features a 'bobbin' type design, with a cylindrical head that has a shallow domed top, mounted on a short, tapered cylindrical post. The inscriptions are cast in relief, showing "LEEK 3 MILES" on the left face and "BUXTON 9 MILES" on the right face.
This milepost was erected by the Lee, Hassop, Middle Hills and Buxton Turnpike Trust and was cast by William Green of Macclesfield in 1833. It serves as a good example of early 19th-century mileposts, reflecting the standardization of roads and the introduction of turnpikes to meet the transport needs of the industrial landscape in 19th-century Staffordshire. The milepost remains in its original location and is intact.
