Description
This is a farm outbuilding located to the north of Scholefield House, built in the late 18th century with some alterations and extensions from the 19th century. The building is constructed from coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings, featuring quoins, plain gables, and a stone slate roof that includes gabled wooden roof vents.
The south elevation has two storeys and five bays, with a single-storey lean-to shippon on the south side. It has five windows that are irregularly spaced, with stone frames and 20th-century window frames that have hopper bases. There is a plain doorway at the east end. The east gable features three stone-framed windows on the ground floor, which have 20th-century joinery, and a first-floor loft doorway that does not have a shutter. The west gable includes three windows and two doorways with plain stone surrounds, one of which serves the lean-to shippon. There is also a single first-floor opening with a shutter.
On the north elevation, there is an off-centre double doorway within a quoined surround, now fitted with 20th-century sliding gear, along with a window and doorway to the left and right. The interior has not been inspected. This substantial and complete farm outbuilding is closely associated with a high-status vernacular house and other listed 17th and 18th-century buildings, and it is listed for its group value.
