Description

CHINLEY, BUXWORTH AND BROWNSIDE

178/0/10007 MAYNESTONE ROAD 23-MAY-01 Chinley Redmires Barn

GV II Farm outbuilding. Late C18, with minor C20 alterations. Coursed rubble gritstone with ashlar dressings and a stone slate roof covering laid to diminishing courses. PLAN: Linear plan on sloping site, lofted at the low south end with gable access to cowhouse. EXTERIOR: 4-bay west elevation with off-centre full height double doorway beneath eaves level lintel. The doorway is set within a chamfered quoined surround and has boarded double doors. Slit breathers below eaves to left of door, small square 4-paned window in massive surround low down to right of doorway, to light standings at south end. East elevation with single doorway opposite the double doorway on the west wall. Deeply-chamfered surround and lintel, and vertically-boarded door. Slit breathers below eaves and taking-in door with quoined surround to left of doorway, and small square 4-paned window at lower level. South gable with single doorways with massive stone surrounds inset art each corner, with narrow glazed breather between, and 2 tiers of square breathers to gable apex. Taking-in door to north gable apex with deeply-chamfered surround. INTERIOR: Not inspected, but said to contain King-post trusses carrying multiple purlins. Forms a group with Redmires House (item 86). A little-altered and robustly-detailed late C18 farm outbuilding, forming part of a prominent grouping of rural buildings. The outbuilding itself combines the functions of barn and cowhouse, and characterises the mixed farming practice and vernacular building tradition of the Pennine uplands of North-West Derbyshire.
