Description
Redmires Barn is a farm outbuilding built in the late 18th century, with some minor alterations from the 20th century. It is constructed from coursed rubble gritstone with ashlar dressings and features a stone slate roof laid in diminishing courses. The barn has a linear plan situated on a sloping site, with a loft at the low south end that provides gable access to the cowhouse.
The west elevation has four bays and an off-centre full-height double doorway beneath an eaves-level lintel. This doorway is framed by a chamfered quoined surround and features boarded double doors. There are slit breathers below the eaves to the left of the door, and a small square 4-paned window in a massive surround located low to the right of the doorway, which lights the standings at the south end. The east elevation has a single doorway opposite the double doorway on the west wall, with a deeply-chamfered surround and lintel, and a vertically-boarded door. It also includes slit breathers below the eaves, a taking-in door with a quoined surround to the left of the doorway, and a small square 4-paned window at a lower level. The south gable features single doorways with massive stone surrounds set into each corner, a narrow glazed breather between, and two tiers of square breathers at the gable apex. There is a taking-in door at the north gable apex with a deeply-chamfered surround.
Although the interior has not been inspected, it is reported to contain King-post trusses that support multiple purlins. Redmires Barn is part of a group with Redmires House and is noted for its robust detailing and minimal alterations, reflecting the mixed farming practices and vernacular building traditions of the Pennine uplands in North-West Derbyshire.
