Description
This is a milepost located on the Bakewell Road in the parish of Baslow and Bubnell, dating from the early 19th century. It is made of cast iron and features a circular shaft that rises to a cylinder with a moulded top, which is divided into panels by bead mouldings. The milepost is inscribed with embossed lettering that reads "LONDON" and painted lettering indicating distances: 153 miles to London, 53 miles to Manchester, 13 miles to Sheffield, 3 miles to Bakewell, 2 miles to Chatsworth, 2 miles to Edensor, and 4 miles to Ashford. This milepost is part of the Chesterfield to Ashford turnpike established in 1812.
