Description

Bubnell Hall is a small country house, dating from the mid-17th century, with alterations and additions from the 18th and early 19th centuries, and a restoration in the early 20th century. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with sandstone dressings, and has stone slate and Welsh slate roofs. The gables are coped, with moulded kneelers, and there are ashlar ridge stacks. The house has two and three storeys. The south elevation, of three, one, two, and one-bay arrangement, follows a half-H plan with projecting gabled bays. The recessed central section has ground and first floor sill bands. A central moulded doorcase has a segmental pediment and a panelled door, flanked by two-light square section flush mullion windows. Above are two similar windows, and then two more. The gabled bay to the right has a six-light recessed and chamfered mullioned and transomed window on each floor, likely from the early 20th century. The left-hand gabled bay contains three three-light square section flush mullion windows. An early 19th century wing is set back to the left, with three bays and glazing bar sashes, including a tripartite sash. The east elevation has two external stacks with paired ashlar diamond stacks. A doorway has vermiculated rustication, with the remains of a three-light recessed and chamfered mullion window above a studded door. To the left is a three-light recessed and chamfered mullioned and transomed window, with two smaller, similar windows above. Internally, one room features 17th century style panelling, and the staircase has heavy turned balusters.
