Description

Bubnell House and Bubnell House East is a house that has been divided into two separate residences. It likely dates back to the 16th century and has undergone alterations in the 17th, 18th, and early 19th centuries. The building is constructed of coursed rubblestone, with some parts rendered, and features a slate stone roof with coped gables and moulded kneelers. A central ashlar ridge stack is present.

The house is two storeys tall and has a T-plan layout consisting of a hall and a cross wing. The south elevation has four bays, with a projecting gabled bay on the left that includes a lean-to addition from the 20th century, which is not of special interest. Above this bay is a glazing bar sash window. The recessed right-hand section features a central doorway with a bolection moulded doorcase and hoodmould, flanked by a pair of half-glazed doors from the 19th century. On either side of the doorway are glazing bar sashes set in plain ashlar surrounds, with two similar windows above, alongside a 2-light square section mullion window with a stepped surround.

To the north, there is an outshut with a catslide roof. A tall 2-light staircase window with a transom has its lower part infilled with brick. To the right, there is a 17th-century recessed and chamfered cross window, which has an additional light added to its lower half.

Inside, the party wall contains the remains of three Caernarvon-arched doorways made of large ashlar blocks, which appear to be medieval and in situ. These may have been service doorways between the open hall and cross wing and are not regularly spaced. Two of the doorways are placed together, with a wall built of large ashlar blocks running east between them. The interior also features a splat baluster dogleg staircase, a large stone hearth with a bracketed lintel and round-arched alcoves, and a late 18th-century stone chimneypiece. An upper room contains a bolection moulded stone chimneypiece.
