Description

PARISH OF BASLOW & BUBNELL COCK HILL SK 27 SE 3/24 (South Side) The Cavendish Hotel II Hotel. Early C18, C19 and C20. Coursed squared sandstone with sandstone dressings. Stone slate roof, coped gables with plain kneelers. Two brick ridge and two gable stacks. Two storeys. South elevation of five symmetrical bays arranged 1-3-1. Raised quoins to west. Central doorway with moulded doorcase, bolection moulding and hoodmould. Half glazed door. Flanked on each side by two glazing bar sashes in raised ashlar surrounds. Four similar windows above flank a central round-arched window with bead moulding, key and impost blocks. Five bay north elevation has a central doorway with plain stone surround and bracketed hood. Halfglazed door. Flanked by two glazing bar sashes in plain surrounds. Five similar window above. Three round-arched roof dormers with glazing bar sashes. To the west gable a projecting canted bay with a doorway and glazing bar sashes. Extensive remodelling and additions of c1980 to east not of special interest. Reputed to have been built as a shooting lodge for the Manners family, becoming an inn, The Cock, in 1700. Source: Derbyshire Life May 1971.
