Description

This is a mile post located on the Chesterfield Road in the parish of Baslow and Bubnell. It dates from the early 19th century and is made of cast iron. The mile post features a circular shaft that rises to a cylinder with a moulded top, which is divided into panels by bead mouldings. It is inscribed with embossed lettering that reads "LONDON" and has almost illegible painted lettering indicating distances: 155 to London, 1 to Baslow, 4 to Chatsworth, 5 to Bakewell, 36 to Manchester, 17 to Buxton, and 7 to Chesterfield. This mile post is part of the Chesterfield to Ashford turnpike established in 1812.
