Description

The Ice House, located in Chatsworth Park, is a structure that likely dates back to 1693, with some later rebuilding. It is built from coursed squared sandstone and features a low flat arched entrance with a moulded lintel, which is currently blocked. A curved retaining wall extends from the entrance, and there is a large earth-covered mound behind it that conceals the main body of the ice house. Historical records indicate that an ice house was present at Chatsworth in 1693, just 33 years after the introduction of ice houses to England. The Gardens and Park surrounding the ice house are recognized on the Gardens Register at Grade I.
