Description
The Summerhouse, known as Luttrell's Seat, is a Grade II listed structure located in Chatsworth Gardens. It was built in 1839, likely designed by Paxton & Robertson, and is constructed in a Saracenic style using sandstone ashlar and Aberdeen granite. The building has a rectangular plan with a roof that is concealed behind a parapet.
The south elevation features a two-bay open arcade with horseshoe arches supported by a polished granite column with a carved capital from Palermo. The pilasters display decorative geometrical patterns, and there is incised decorative work around the arches. The overhanging roof is held up by moulded stone brackets, with incised decoration on the underside of the eaves, and the parapet is adorned with stepped triangular motifs.
The side and rear walls of the summerhouse are solid with no openings. Inside, there are similar blind arches on the sides and two at the rear, supported by colonnettes. A continuous moulded sill band runs around the interior, with incised decoration around the arches. There is a bench on moulded brackets, and a text from Virgil, dated 1839, is inscribed on the wall. The surrounding Gardens and Park are registered at Grade I.
