Description

PARISH OF CHATSWORTH CHATSWORTH GARDENS SK 2670 6/71 Summer House, Known as Luttrell's Seat II Summer House. 1839, probably by Paxton & Robertson. Saracenic style. Sandstone ashlar and Aberdeen granite. Roof hidden behind parapet. Rectangular plan. South elevation has a two-bay open arcade of horseshoe arches, on a polished granite column and a carved capital from Palermo. Decorative geometrical patterns to the pilasters and incised decorative work around the arches. Overhanging roof on moulded stone brackets with incised decoration on the underside of the eaves. Parapet with stepped triangular motifs. The side and rear walls have no openings. The interior has similar blind arches to sides and two to rear, on colonnettes. Continuous moulded sill band. Incised decoration around the arches. Bench on moulded brackets. Text from Virgil on the wall, dated 1839. The Gardens and Park are included on the Gardens Register at Grade I.
