Description

The First Duke's Greenhouse is a greenhouse built between 1697 and 1698, rebuilt in 1749 and 1750, with alterations made by Joseph Paxton in 1832. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar. The south elevation features a design of five bays, with the center consisting of a three-bay open arcade supported by Tuscan Doric columns. This arcade includes a triglyph frieze, cornice, and a balustraded parapet adorned with urns. On either side of the arcade are five tall round-arched windows fitted with glazing bar sashes, and there is a plain impost band above. The structure has a moulded cornice and an ornamental moulded parapet that alternates between urns and busts, with the busts originally sourced from the courtyard of a late 17th-century house. The rear elevation is mostly blind, featuring only a central round-arched entrance. The greenhouse has a glazed roof. The surrounding Gardens and Park are recognized on the Gardens Register at Grade I.
