Description

Low Arnside Farmhouse and Barn is a house and barn dating from the early 18th century. The farmhouse is constructed of painted stone with a slate roof, while the barn remains unpainted. The farmhouse is two storeys high and consists of three bays. The windows feature two- and three-light wooden mullioned frames that are chamfered on the inside, with iron opening lights and slate dripcourses above. There is a fire window to the right of the entrance, which is sheltered by a slate gabled canopy. The gable ends have stacks.

The barn includes a cow house with an entrance and a window beneath a projecting slate course, along with pivoted barn doors. At the rear of the farmhouse, there is a lean-to extension, and a two-light wooden mullion frame window in the original back wall, which is plastered on the inside. The rear of the barn has a blocked winnowing door and barn doors leading to the cow house.

Inside the farmhouse, there are chamfered beams and a fireplace bressummer, along with two cupboards in the fireplace, one of which has a door. A plank and muntin partition features cupboard doors, and there are wide boarded doors. The barn has hewn trusses and a small rounded projection in the house wall, which is likely a bread oven. The property is owned by the National Trust, a gift from Beatrix Potter.
