Description
Holme Ground Cottage, barn, and stable are a house, bank barn, and stable dating from the early 18th century and later. The buildings are constructed of painted stone rubble, with the outhouses unpainted, and feature slate roofs. The house is two storeys high with two bays, while the stable is located to the left and the barn, which includes a cowhouse below, adjoins at right angles to the right.
The house has casement windows and a central entrance that is topped with a slate gabled canopy. The stable features an entrance flanked by windows, all beneath a slate dripcourse. At the right end of the stable, there is a small re-entrant block at the angle between the house and barn, which has a wide-boarded door. The cowhouse has two entrances flanking a window, which was formerly an entrance, and is covered by a pentice. There is also a blocked winnowing door leading to the upper level.
The right side of the stable has a crow-stepped gable and a slate dripcourse, along with a later lean-to extension. The rear of the stable includes a garage door at the upper level and another lean-to extension. The rear of the house displays varied fenestration. The barn has a rear entrance with a pentice and pivoted wide-boarded doors. Inside the cowhouse, there are slate partitions set in timber frames. This property is owned by the National Trust and was a gift from Beatrix Potter.
