Description

Bridge End Cottage and the attached barn are a house and barn combination dating from the late 17th century or 18th century, with a late 18th-century extension. The bresummer is inscribed with "IB 1703". The structure is built from stone rubble, with the house part painted and a slate roof. It has two storeys and four bays, with the barn located to the right. There is a slate dripcourse, and the windows feature small-paned casements. The first bay on the ground floor has a fixed glazing window and a fire window to the left. The wide-boarded door is fitted with strap hinges and a wooden lock, adorned with decorative metal plates, and has a slate gabled canopy above it. The barn features paired pivoted doors, one of which was added in 1986, and has a roof that extends down as a pentice. To the right, there is a small window and door, both with a slate dripcourse above. The building has a gable-end stack and a cross-axial stack. The right side has two lean-to extensions, one of which is a privy that retains its seat. The rear of the barn has a dripcourse, while the rear of the house features an entrance and irregular fenestration. Inside, there is an upper cruck truss with a stud and plaster partition wall. The ground floor includes a stone fireplace and a plank and muntin partition, along with a stone stair. This property is owned by The National Trust, having been gifted by Beatrix Potter.
