Description
High Yewdale Farmhouse and outbuildings date from the 17th century, with later additions. The buildings are constructed of stone, with the farmhouse being roughcast and featuring slate roofs. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has four bays, with the first bay having a steeper roof. Most of the windows are sash style with glazing bars and horns; the ground floor windows have slate drip courses, while the third bay features small-paned fixed glazing with an opening pane. The first bay is adjacent to an open-fronted shed and has small lights. The second bay includes a gabled porch, with an entrance door that has round-headed panels and moulded styles and rails. The entrance between the third and fourth bays has a panelled door and a gabled trellis porch. There are two cross-axial stacks with slate set-offs.
A small two-bay unit adjoins the open-fronted shed, featuring a slate drip course; the ground floor windows have slate-hung lintels, while the first floor windows have wood mullions with four and three lights. There is a wide-boarded door. To the right, there is a cow house and barn that are part of a range continuous with the farmhouse. The cow house door has ventilation slots and flanking windows, while the barn doors are pivoted. The wing to the right has overhanging, bracketed eaves, and the end bay has steps leading to a granary entrance. The rear of the wing features a 20th-century lean-to shed, and the rear of the farmhouse has a gabled wing built into the hillside. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is said to contain upper cruck trusses and timber partitions. The property is owned by The National Trust, a gift from Beatrix Potter.
