Description

Tarn Hows Cottage is a house with an outbuilding and the ruins of a possibly original house, dating from the 17th century or early 18th century, with some parts possibly older. The structure is built of stone rubble with a roughcast front and has a slate roof. It is two storeys high and features a three-bay house, a two-bay outbuilding to the right, and a single-storey bay to the left. There are dripcourses above the ground floor windows, which are sashed with glazing bars. The first bay of the ground floor includes a two-light wood-mullioned fire window. A large gabled porch is present at the front.

The first bay of the outbuilding is roughcast and has a garage door with a slated lintel, while the second bay is made of stone and features a small entrance with a slated lintel. The bay to the left has an entrance as well. The building includes a cross-axial stack and a gable-end stack. At the rear, there is a gabled wing with dripcourses, casement windows, and an entrance. The ruins to the right have a low wall at the front with an entrance and indications of a blocked window. The gable end of the outbuilding shows the roof line of a former building and has a large stone smoke hood with stepped sides and a chamfered timber bressummer. Inside, the property features chamfered beams. Tarn Hows Cottage is owned by The National Trust.
