Description

36 and 38 East Street are a mirrored pair of houses dating from the late 19th century, with No 38 currently functioning as a shop. The houses have solid rendered fronts and slate roofs adorned with crested ridge-tiles, featuring a finial on the right gable end that faces Woodland Road. Each house is three storeys tall, with two windows wide, and the windows are closely set next to the party wall.

In the centre of each house, there are adjacent round-arched doorways flanked by pilasters and moulded archivolts, which have vermiculated keystones. The doors are four-panelled, with the two bottom panels flush, and No 38 has an old knocker. The outer windows on the ground and second storeys are designed as canted bays, and there is a dentilled cornice above each storey, all topped with a pent-roof. The middle windows on the second storey are flanked by pilasters that support a flat triangular pediment spanning both windows. The third-storey windows also have similar pilasters, with window heads that break through the boxed eaves-cornice and are gabled, featuring bargeboards designed as four-centred arches with shaped finials. The combined fronts display raised quoins. All windows are sashes, typically two-paned where width allows, except for the ground storey of the bay window at No 38, which now has a small-paned shop window. The side wall facing Woodland Road has two-paned sashes.

The interiors have not been inspected, but the entrance passage at No 38 features patterned coloured tiles and a glazed inner door with coloured glass.
