Description
This is a house, likely dating back to the 17th century or earlier, and probably divided into three cottages in the 19th century. It is situated on the north side of East Street in Ashburton. The front wall is unusually thick and rendered, with a slate roof. A substantial chimney constructed from large squared stone blocks sits on the ridge between numbers 39A and 41. Another large rendered chimney, potentially from the 17th or earlier, is located on the rear wall of number 39A. The building is two storeys high with a four-window front. Numbers 39 and 39A share an adjacent doorway: number 39 features a four-panelled door with the lower panels flush and the upper panels glazed, while number 39A has a door with two glazed upper panels and three flush lower panels. Number 41 has a doorway with a late 20th-century plank door at its right-hand end. The windows are mostly 2-paned sash windows with horns set in recessed box frames, with the exception of a late 20th-century casement window in the ground storey of number 41. An eaves cornice is present, decorated with paired brackets.
