Description

No. 42 East Street is a house with a shop, built in the late 18th century, featuring a late 19th-century shop front. The front is solidly rendered to imitate masonry, while the rear wall is slate-hung. The building has a slated roof and two chimneys: a stone rubble chimney on the left gable end and a red-brick chimney on the right gable end. It stands three storeys high and is four windows wide on the third storey, although one window is missing from the second storey.

The entrance features a round-arched doorway with an open triangular pediment supported by fluted pilasters. The door is six-panelled, with a knocker and the two bottom panels flush, and has matching reveals and a cobweb fanlight above. The windows are six-paned sashes in concealed frames, with the right ground storey window being triple-sashed and topped with a round arch, resembling a Venetian window.

The building has a moulded and dentilled eaves-cornice with a fluted frieze. The shop front is flanked by fluted pilasters that support an entablature, with a name plaque in the centre of the frieze, topped by a segmental pediment that contains a plain festooned shield. The display window features sashes, with the upper sash being much shorter than the lower. The shop door is four-panelled with a semicircular top panel, and all but the two bottom panels are now glazed.
