Description
58 and 59 High Street are a pair of houses with shops, built in the early to mid 19th century. They feature solid rendered fronts and slate roofs, with chimneys on each side wall; the left chimney is rendered while the right is made of late 19th-century red brick and has three spiked pots. The buildings are three storeys tall, each with a three-storeyed canted bay window in the centre and a doorway to the left.
Both houses have sash windows on all floors except for the ground storey of No 58, which has been rebuilt in plastic. The middle sashes include margin-panes, and the sashes have horns, except for the ground storey at No 59. Above the ground storey of each house is a deeply projecting wooden entablature. No 58 features a half-glazed door with a solid moulded panel and an old letterbox at the bottom, while No 59 has a six-panelled door with an old cast-iron knocker.
Raised quoins flank both upper storeys, and at the left-hand end of the ground storey of No 58, the quoins of No 57 continue to serve both houses. The interiors have not been inspected, but the entrance passage at No 59 includes a panelled dado. Both entrances have floors made of chequered red and cream tiles. The buildings are included for their group value.
