Description
53 and 54 High Street is a pair of houses with a shop, likely originally a single house, that underwent early to mid 19th-century remodelling, possibly of a 17th-century or earlier structure. The front is solidly rendered, topped with a slate roof featuring crested red ridge-tiles, and there is a rendered chimney on the right-hand end wall. The building likely follows a 3-room-and-through-passage plan, being one room deep with a long rear wing to the right. The doorway was probably added to the middle room when the house was divided.
The structure has three storeys and a symmetrical front with a three-window range. The middle window on the ground storey is flanked by two round-arched doorways. The ground storey features horizontal channelling with a raised band at the sill level of the second storey, and the doorways have voussoirs channelled into the render. The door at No 53 is a four-panelled design with a brass letterbox, while No 54 has a late 20th-century glazed shop door with plain display windows on either side, which are likely enlargements of standard domestic windows. The remaining windows are two-paned, box-framed sashes with a single upright glazing bar, except for the middle window on the second storey, which is a four-paned late 20th-century casement. The interior has not been inspected.
