Description

A pair of early 19th-century houses and a shop, with alterations in the mid-19th century, located on East Street, Ashburton. The front wall is rendered, likely covering a timber-frame structure. The left gable is covered in slate. The roof is slate-covered, with a red-brick chimney on the left gable end. The building is three storeys high and appears originally to have been three windows wide. The central doorway, bearing the house numbers for both properties, has panelled pilasters and an entablature, with a four-panelled door featuring flush lower panels. To the left of the central doorway is a door to number 20, also four-panelled with flush lower panels, and to its left is a three-light sash window with horns. Number 18 to the right has two display windows flanking a recessed shop door; its windows are three-paned, with the uprights designed as slender columns. The entablature of the central doorway extends across the shop front. The upper-floor windows have barred sashes in moulded flush frames, with 6-over-6 pane sashes on the second storey and 3-over-6 pane sashes on the third storey. A small boxed eaves cornice tops the building.
