Description

The National Westminster Bank, located at No. 19 East Street in Ashburton, is a bank building constructed in 1891. It features a granite front with ashlar in the ground storey and coursed squared rubble above. The upper storey window surrounds and the top cornice are made of limestone, likely Bath stone, and the roof is slated with granite chimneys on each side wall. The building stands three storeys high and has a four-window front designed in an elaborated Georgian style.

The ground storey includes round-arched doorways at each end, topped with triangular pediments supported by large fluted brackets that extend into the second storey. The left-hand doorway retains its original three-panelled double doors and brass bell-pull, while the right-hand doors were altered in the late 20th century. In the center, there are two windows flanked and separated by rusticated pilasters. The upper storeys feature plain sash windows set in moulded architraves with continuous bracketed sills. The second storey architraves are eared, adorned with pulvinated friezes and alternating triangular and segmental pediments. The third storey architraves have keystones embellished with swags and scrolls. At the top, there is an entablature with a moulded cornice and blocking-course, which includes a low pedestal buttressed with scrolls, inscribed with "ESTD. 1832." This building was originally the Devon and Cornwall Bank.
