Description
A pair of houses on High Street, Bideford, dating from the mid-19th century, and potentially incorporating elements of a 17th-century building. The houses have rendered solid walls and a slate roof. Each gable end has an old red-brick chimney, with the chimney on the left partially rebuilt in red brick and the one on the right entirely rebuilt in cream brick.
The building is three storeys high, with a basement at the left-hand end where the ground slopes downwards. The fronts of the two houses are symmetrical, each featuring two windows. A single-light window and a doorway are located between the houses, with two-light windows on either side, except on the third storey. All windows and doorways have raised cement surrounds, with shaped tops to the doorway surrounds and second-storey window surrounds. A raised band runs above the ground storey, and pilaster strips flank the front. The windows are barred sashes with 8 panes in the single-light windows and 4 or 6 panes in the two-light windows. The basement at No. 33 has an old plank door with strap-hinges and a shaped head surround. To the right of the basement window is a three-light window featuring 17th-century ovolo-moulded wood mullions. A bead-moulded board runs below the eaves.
The interior was not inspected, but the inner front door at No. 33 is half-glazed, with moulded panels below and coloured-glass margin-panes above.
