Description

51 and 53 King Street are a mirrored pair of houses from the early 19th century located in Lower Brixham. They feature solid rendered walls and a slated roof, with a rendered chimney on each side wall. The buildings stand three storeys high, with a garret at No. 53. Each house has one window width and paired doorways in the center, set within a single opening. The door at No. 51 is six-panelled, while the door at No. 53 is four-panelled, both having flush bottom panels. There is a combined flat hood over the doors, likely a 20th-century replacement.

In front, there are four steps made of Devonian limestone, which have been partly repaired with cement. Each house features a flat-topped, canted bay window on the ground storey; the bay at No. 53 is from the 19th century and has a moulded top cornice and sash windows, with the middle sashes each containing three upright glazing bars. The second-storey window at No. 51 has a segmental head, while the third-storey windows in both houses have barred sashes: the second storey has two over two panes at No. 51 and six over six panes in the third storey, while No. 53 has four over four panes in the third storey.

Rusticated pilaster strips run down the left side of the building and in the center, stopping above the paired doors. The eaves cornice features small, closely-set moulded brackets. There is a flat-topped dormer at No. 53, which is glazed at the front and sides. The second-storey window at No. 53 was widened in the 20th century.
