Description
The barn at Clarke's Farm is a structure dating from the 14th or 15th century, with an enlargement from the 18th century. It is timber-framed and features weatherboarding, topped with a corrugated-iron roof. The barn has four bays, with the south end bay being wider than the others and used as a cow byre. The south end has a half-hipped design and includes two plank doors of different sizes leading to the loft, along with a glazed opening below. The east side has scattered glazed openings and plank barn doors leading to an off-centre opening, with the byre projecting forward to the left. On the west side, there are two pairs of doors, including main plank barn doors to an off-centre opening and a corrugated-iron door to the byre, as well as a single glazed opening to the right of the barn doors. The north end is gabled and has the remains of a cow-byre attached, which has been largely rebuilt and features a hipped roof. Inside, there are two crucks and two trusses supported on posts. One complete cruck has a collar, with cruck spurs connecting to the posts. The second cruck, which was originally at the south end of the barn, has been cut off for the hipped roof and includes a heavy tie-beam. The tie-beam trusses have collars and strutting, supported on jowled posts with curved knee-bracing. The two northern bays feature widely spaced studded wall framing with long straight passing braces.
