Description
Barn. Constructed between 1441 and 1442, as determined by dendrochronology; extended in the 17th or 18th century. It is a timber-frame structure with weatherboarding. The roof is hipped, with a small gablet at the north end, and has been re-covered with corrugated-iron sheets.
The plan shows a 5-bay barn; the south bay has been truncated; an outshut was added at the north end, and a midstrey was added on the west side in the 17th or 18th century.
The west front features a midstrey at the centre, with a half-hipped roof and three stable doors to the left. The rear (east) elevation has two stable doors and small windows set low under the eaves.
The interior contains a 5-bay medieval barn with six cruck-trusses. Trusses B, C and D have arch-braced collars and a saddle at the apex. Trusses A and E are crucks with blades that extend above high collars and have curved braces above a mid-rail or tie-beam. Truss A is rebated, likely in preparation for the outshut at the north end. The south bay is truncated, resulting in the loss of truss F. One tier of trenched purlins, curved wind-braces and common-rafter couples largely remain intact. Wall-plates and wall-framing appear to be later additions. The 17th/18th century midstrey on the west side has collar-trusses with clasped purlins.
This is a rare example of a medieval cruck barn in Hampshire.
