Description

The dining hall, built in 1925-1926, was designed by Guy Dawber for Lord Wandsworth College. It is constructed of red brick laid in a Flemish bond pattern, with stone dressings and clay tile roofs.

The building has a rectangular plan with an attic storey. A two-storey northern extension block was added in 1982 and is not included in this listing. Internally, the space was recently reconfigured between 2018 and 2019 to create a large dining room with kitchen service areas to the north. The attic spaces are accessed from the northern extension block; the central valley of the roof was filled in during the recent works to provide additional staff rooms.

The southern elevation has five bays. Four twelve-light sash windows are positioned on either side of the main entrance. Flat-gauged brick arches are above the sash windows. The central two sash windows and door are framed by four plain stone pilasters which support a stepped stone pediment with a central wreath. A brick parapet follows the return of the main elevation to the west, behind which are three dormer windows. A dormer window is also set on the corner of the western elevation behind the parapet, with a door into the dining room below. A glazed dining room extension, dating to 2018-2019 and recessed from the main elevation, is attached to this western elevation and is excluded from this listing. Further two sash windows and a dormer window are on the side of the extension.

The eastern elevation is simpler, with a single dormer window on the corner with the main elevation and a door below. Two further doors, separated by two modern sash windows, provide access to the dining room; these serve as the main entrance and exit. Queuing railings and a curved awning have been added to the front of this elevation and are excluded from the listing.

Inside, the internal spaces have been extensively redeveloped in the 2018-2019 works. The main dining areas, located to the south of the building, retain their original exposed roof structure, but the interiors are otherwise modern. Original sash windows in the western brick wall were removed to create openings into the glazed extension.
