Description
The outbuilding located to the southwest of Hardwicke Farmhouse is a former detached house dating from the late 16th century. It is constructed with a timber frame and retains much of its original wattle and daub, with a roughcast finish and a plain tile roof. The building is single-storey with an attic and features a lean-to at the southeast end.
On the northeast side, there is small framing with two doorways; one is low on the left and the other on the right, both equipped with plank doors. The northwest end is gabled and has small framing, jowled corner posts, and a four-light unglazed timber window with square mullions, along with a shuttered loft hole above. The southeast end includes an attached timber-framed lean-to with brick panels on the left side, and two attic openings in the gable: one central with a plain architrave and another to the right with a leaded casement. The back of the building features small framing and two two-light attic openings with shutters.
Inside, there are four post and truss bays, and a 19th-century staircase has been inserted to access the loft at the northwest end. This outbuilding may have been a later addition to the group that forms the medieval manor house of Rudge and is part of a collection of structures around a yard.
