Description

The Bridge Keeper's House, located to the northwest of Hardwicke Bridge, was built around 1830 with a later 19th-century addition. It was designed by Robert Mylne, the engineer for the Gloucester and Berkeley Ship Canal. The house is constructed of stucco with painted brickwork and features a Welsh slate roof, while the addition has a plain tile roof.

This single-storey building has a cruciform layout and a portico that faces the canal. The original structure has gable ends with a low-pitched pediment above a continuous entablature. The front portico is supported by fluted Greek Doric columns on circular bases, arranged in a distyle in antis, with engaged flanking walls that each contain a small square window. The central entrance is a plain doorway.

On the southwest end, there is a single cambered-headed sash window, while the northeast side has an altered 20th-century casement window. The rear pediment is partially obscured by the addition, which has various scattered windows. A chimney is mounted on the ridge, aligned with the front portico. The interior has not been inspected. This house is one of two standard designs for bridge keeper's houses on the canal, attributed to Mylne but built after his death. As of January 1985, all doors and windows were boarded over.
