Description

Old Hall is a pair of houses built in the 14th century, with extensions from the 16th century and alterations made in the 19th century. The building was restored in the 20th century by C.D. Carus-Wilson. It features a timber frame, with parts extended and rebuilt in brick, and has 20th-century brick chimneys and a stone slate roof. The structure is single-storey with an attic and consists of three bays, extended to the north, with a single-storey wing at the northeast corner.

The front of the building has square framing set on a mixed brick and lias plinth, with 20th-century brick infill in the panels. There is a plank door leading to the original house, along with altered scattered casements and three 20th-century timber-framed gabled dormers. To the right, there is a brick-built wing with a gable end chimney. The south end features half-hipped and square-framed construction with jowled corner posts and framed-up casements. The west side has small framing with scattered casements from the 19th and 20th centuries, two dormers (one gabled and one raking), and a plank door to the right. The north end has a rebuilt gable end in brick with a projecting brick chimney stack and 20th-century casements.

Inside the original house, there are three cruck frames, one of which is visible in the attic room and is of very thin section and chamfered. The lower part of the arched brace to the collar above the ceiling is also chamfered, possibly indicating the dividing bay of an open hall. A cross passage was inserted in the 16th century.
