Description

Barn. Probably dating from the 14th or 15th century, with later additions and alterations. The barn is timber framed and built using cruck construction. Originally, the timber frame was exposed, but it is now clad in red brick and corrugated iron, with plain tile and corrugated iron roofs. It is a cruck barn of three bays, with two bays of Queen strut construction added to the north. The southern two and a half bays are open to the roof, with a loft inserted over the remainder. A wide entrance is located on the east side.

The interior features three large cruck trusses, each with upper and lower collars and curved windbraces. The south gable end has been rebuilt using curved principals with V-struts extending from the collar. Some original horizontal planking remains behind the corrugated iron, indicating that the barn was formerly weatherboarded. A set of carpenter's marks can be seen on the cruck trusses. There is no evidence of smoke-blackening on the roof trusses, suggesting that the barn was always used for agricultural purposes.
