Description

The White House is a cottage located in Yockleton, Westbury, dating from the mid-to-late 17th century, with alterations and additions from the mid-to-late 19th century and late 20th century. It features a timber frame of cruck construction, with painted brick and rendered panels, some of which have been rebuilt and extended in painted brick. The roof is slate-covered. The building is arranged in an L-plan with two framed bays and a gabled cross-wing of one framed bay to the left, which was formerly two bays but was shortened due to road widening. There are also 20th-century additions at the rear.

The structure has one storey and an attic, with framing consisting of square panels (originally three from the sole-plate to the wall plate), and the eaves were raised in the 19th century. There is a brick stack behind the ridge, offset to the right, and an integral lateral brick stack in the cross-wing. A central gabled eaves dormer features a two-light diamond-leaded casement, while two 20th-century dormers are located at the rear. The left gable has a two-light diamond-leaded attic casement, and the ground floor has four windows, which include one-, two-, and three-light diamond-leaded wooden casements from the 19th and 20th centuries. The entrance is at the rear.

Inside, there is a full cruck truss at the junction of the 'hall' range and the cross-wing, although the apex is missing. The collar is divided, and there is a tie-beam. The interior also features chamfered ceiling beams, a large open fireplace with a chamfered lintel, and an early 18th-century attic door with two raised and fielded panels and L-hinges.
