Description
Newnham Hall Farmhouse is a farmhouse built in 1723 for John Nicholls. It was remodelled and had its eaves raised in the early 19th century, with later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of red brick with a stuccoed front, featuring coped verges on kneelers, slate roofs, and end stacks. The original house is L-shaped, with a mid-19th century addition at the rear. It has three storeys, with brick storey bands from around 1723 at the first and second floor levels on the left and right-hand returns, and dentilled eaves cornices from the early to mid-19th century on the short range of the L and the mid-19th century addition.
The front has five bays, with glazing bar sashes and a central porch supported by two pairs of Tuscan columns, leading to a half-glazed door with a rectangular overlight. The front also features stuccoed imitation quoins, twin blocked oval-shaped openings on the original gables (which were former attic windows), and a late 19th century canted bay window on the left-hand return. A datestone marked 'N' is located above the second storey floor band on the right-hand return. There is a late 19th century lean-to by J M against the right-hand gable end, along with a mid-20th century flat-roofed extension from 1723 in front of it, also on the right. Inside, the cellars have chamfered beams that were likely reused from an earlier house on the site.
