Description

Tithe House is a disused farmhouse dated 1755. It is constructed of red brick on a coursed rubblestone plinth and has an asbestos slate roof. The building features a two-room plan, is one storey high with a gable-lit attic, and has projecting brick eaves courses along with parapeted gable ends that have chamfered red sandstone copings. There are external brick stacks at each end. The front has two windows, which are 19th-century two-light wooden casements, with the right window having a segmental head. The central entrance features a two-panelled door and a brick porch with a chamfered stone-coped parapeted gable, along with a yellow sandstone datestone. Each gable end has two-light wooden casements flanking the stacks, and there are two additional two-light wooden casements at the rear. To the right is a one-storey out-house, also dated 1755, which has a brick end stack. Inside, there is a staircase leading up from the entrance, and the left-hand ground-floor room contains a pair of transverse beams along with a large open fireplace that has a bread oven and a cast iron range. This house was built for Thomas Ambler, who was the improprietor of the tithes of Ford, and it was later occupied by his tithe collector. It is an early and well-preserved small post-enclosure farmhouse, notable for being a dated example.
