Description

The war memorial in Minchinhampton Market Square was designed by Sidney Barnsley in 1919. It is made of limestone and features an octagonal stepped base leading to a high octagonal pedestal. The shaft of the memorial is also octagonal and topped with a Celtic cross, which has delicate floral carvings. The pedestal displays a finely carved inscription in serif capitals that reads: 'IN MEMORY OF THE MEN WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR & AS A THANKSGIVING TO GOD FOR THEIR COMRADES WHOSE LIVES WERE SPARED. THIS CROSS IN GRATITUDE WAS SET UP BY THEIR FELLOW TOWNSMEN AD 1919'. The overall design of the memorial is simple yet elegantly proportioned, characteristic of Barnsley's furniture style.
