Description
The War Memorial in the churchyard of the Church of St Martin in Worcester is a stone ashlar monument that was unveiled on 14 November 1920. It was designed and built by David Bros of Barbourne and funded by public subscription.
The memorial features an octagonal cross at the top, which has octagonal arms. Below the cross, there is a tapered, octagonal shaft that has a moulded cap and rises from a plinth. The plinth has an ogee-moulded cap with roll and cavetto mouldings along the edge. The eight sides of the memorial are inscribed, with the south face stating, ‘IN / GRATEFUL MEMORY / OF THE MEN OF / THIS PARISH WHO / IN THE / GREAT WAR / 1914-1919 / GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR THEIR COUNTRY.’ The names of the fallen are inscribed on the other seven sides. The base of the plinth features a roll and hollow chamfer moulding, and the memorial stands on a platform with three octagonal steps.
