Description

Rose Lawn is a detached house located at 89 London Road, set back from the road in a large plot. It dates from around 1800 to 1836 and has undergone later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of red brick with stone detailing and features a hipped slated roof that is partially concealed by a coped parapet on all sides. There are stacks on the left roof slope and the right-return wall, both with oversailing details and pots. The house has a double-depth plan with entrances at the rear and from the front through a French window.

The exterior consists of three storeys and a cellar, with a symmetrical facade that includes three first-floor windows. The stone detailing features sills and parapet coping, along with an eaves cornice on the front elevation. The first-floor windows are 2/1 sashes, while the second-floor windows are 2/2 sashes, all set in plain reveals with sills. The ground floor has French windows with overlights, accessed by stone steps leading to the center window, all under flat gauged brick arches. There are external blind-boxes for all upper-floor openings and for the left ground-floor window. The house features a mix of window styles including 8/8, 2/2, and 1/1 with margin glazing on the returns. Access is provided via a flight of external steps leading to a six-panel door on the rear elevation, with the original access located in the left return. The rear includes single and two-storey ranges.

Inside, Rose Lawn retains many original features, such as an open-well staircase with a wreathed and ramped handrail and square balusters, four and six-panel doors, skirtings, architraves, and picture rails. There are also plaster cornices and some fireplaces still present.
