Description

No. 70 London Road is a terraced house built between 1780 and 1820, with later additions and alterations. The house is constructed of red brick and features painted stone sills. Its roof is concealed behind a tall brick parapet with stone coping, and there are dentilled eaves on the left return. The high parapet continues on the right return.

The entrance has a timber doorcase, and there is a timber and stucco bay with a lead roof. The house has a single-depth plan, with the main axis running perpendicular to the street. A through passage on the left leads to a central stair hall, and there is a further ground-floor room off the passage to the rear left, which interlocks with the adjoining house to the east, No. 72.

The building has three storeys and an attic, with two first-floor windows. The first and second floors feature replacement 6/6 sash windows in near-flush frames, complete with sills and flat gauged brick arches. The ground floor has a canted bay with a window arrangement of 6/6, 8/8, and 6/6, along with abbreviated panelled pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice, topped by a flat roof. The entrance includes a replacement 6-panel door and a radial pattern fanlight with segmental margin-glazing, framed by a narrow pilaster doorcase with brackets supporting an open pediment. The interior has not been inspected.
