Description

This is a house built around 1780 to 1820, constructed in two phases with subsequent additions and alterations. The exterior is painted stucco with stone detailing. The roof is a two-span structure, with slate, plain clay tile, and a parapet that partially conceals it; the north side has a hipped roofline and a brick stack with an overhanging detail and decorative pots. The house follows a double-depth plan with a central stairhall in the return. The east and west walls are not parallel, resulting in some rooms being out-of-square. While the address is London Road, the main facade and entrance face Battenhall Road to the west. The building is two storeys high with an attic. It has three windows on the first floor. Stone detailing includes coping to the parapet with swept ramps leading to the returns which are topped by ball finials, and sills. All windows are 6/6 sash windows set in near-flush frames. The off-centre right entrance has a replacement panelled door with glazed sections, set within a moulded architrave.

The left return, facing London Road, has two first-floor windows with 6/6 sash windows in near-flush frames, and a similar pair on the ground floor. The right return features a single-storey outshut with a canted bay window containing sashes of 6/6, 8/8, and 6/6; others are 2/2 and 6/6. A hipped roof dormer has a 3/3 sash window. A bay window to the rear incorporates French doors between two 6/6 sash windows.

The interior retains original plasterwork, including a frieze decorated with scrolled roses in the front and right-hand rooms. There is also original joinery, consisting of 6-raised-and-fielded-panel doors set in tooled architraves and fleurons.
