Description

Nos. 1 and 2 Battenhall Place are a pair of semi-detached houses dating from around 1820, with later additions and alterations. The houses are constructed of painted stucco and brick, with a slate roof. The roof features parapeted gables, stone coping to the left and brick to the right, and decorative mutular eaves. A party-wall ridge stack and a stack to the left gable are present, both with overhanging detail and decorative pots. A lead roof and cheeks cover the dormer.

The houses have a double-depth plan, each having a central lobby entrance. The facade is symmetrical, with two storeys, an attic, and a cellar. There are five (2:1:2) first-floor windows. The stucco detailing includes sills, a plinth, chamfered rustication to the ground floor, which is terminated by a plain band over the window heads. The first floor is lined to simulate ashlar, with false quoins flanking brick piers at the gable ends. Rusticated aprons are present below the first-floor windows, and the window openings have channelled wedge lintels. The centre ground-floor window has a stepped lintel with a lion's head in relief to the keystone; the window above it has an eared architrave and a semicircular arched head with a fluted radial shell motif in the tympanum, and a swag above. All windows are 6/6 sash windows in near-flush frames, with the centre window on each floor being a false window.

The entrances are matching, with stone steps leading to a six-panel door, all raised and fielded. A fanlight is above each entrance; the fanlight to the left is plain, while the one to the right has a petal design. The pilaster doorcase has a frieze and cornice, with relief decoration including acanthus leaves, putti, and musical instruments. The central dormer has a cambered roof. The mullion has a 3/3 sash window on each side. Sash windows are present on the returns, with flat-gauged brick arches and keystones. The interior has not been inspected.
