Description

No. 75 Royal Terrace is a terrace house located in Weymouth, built in 1816. It features Flemish bond brickwork and a slate roof. The building has a one-room width and double-depth plan with a double roof over the central valley, and a side entry leading to a rear dogleg stair and lower service range.

The exterior consists of three storeys, an attic, and a basement, with three windows, all of which are plain sashes. There are two late 19th-century gabled dormers with decorative barge-boards and finials, and the windows are set in brick voussoirs with stone sills. The first floor has deep sashes that extend down to floor level, leading to a full-width balcony with the original cast-iron balustrade. The rendered basement also features plain sashes.

To the left, there is an original 8-panelled door set in an arch with two recessed orders, topped by a reeded transom and a plain fanlight, accessed by seven stone steps with nosings. The building has a plain band under the balcony, a moulded cornice, a blocking course, and a parapet, with two stacks positioned to the right. The three-storey rear service range has a hipped end above a canted oriel, and the back wall features glazing-bar sashes and a central small dormer.

Royal Terrace originally consisted of 18 houses built in two phases, with this house being part of the early phase. A straight joint in the face brickwork with No. 74 next door indicates that construction was not continuous even within the main phases. Despite the loss of glazing bars on the street front, this house remains one of the better examples in the terrace, particularly noted for its rear detailing. The interior has not been inspected.
