Description
The piers, gates, railings, and dwarf wall at the boundary to the churchyard of the Church of St John the Evangelist were constructed in the mid-19th century. They are made of cast iron and limestone. Located immediately south of the south porch, there is a pair of gates featuring fleur-de-lys heads on the rails, set into limestone piers that are approximately 600 millimeters square and topped with heavy moulded caps. The right pier is partly built into an adjacent wall and has a simple overthrow with a lamp and acrotoria.
Running northward along St John's Road from this point, there are 27 panels of railing, each about 760 millimeters high, above a dwarf wall of varying height. Each railing panel consists of 27 slender uprights with flattened spear tips, and the main posts are supported by iron stays. The dwarf wall, which serves as a retaining wall for most of its length, is constructed from squared limestone rubble and topped with weathered sandstone capping. The railings are generally in good condition, particularly notable for their delicate design.
