Description
The wall and railings to the south of the Church of St John the Evangelist are a retaining wall and railings, likely built in the 1820s, with the railings designed by George Edmund Street between 1861 and 1873, making them contemporary with the church. The wall is made of local grey limestone rubble and features cast-iron railings. It is an impressively tall retaining wall that supports a terrace, with a flight of steps leading up from Cary Lodge. The inner side of the wall has a string course. In front of the church, the wall is topped with limestone coping and features exceptionally bold High Victorian railings. These railings have cinquefoil-headed arches between scrolled verticals topped with orb finials. The arches are decorated with scrolls, flower shapes, and twists alongside tapering verticals, showcasing a fine example of high-quality High Victorian ironwork.
