Description
38 The Terrace is a terraced house, built around the 1830s, currently used as offices. The building is stuccoed and features a blocked-out façade with a two-span hipped slate roof and stacks with rendered shafts. It is set into sharply sloping ground and has a rectangular double-depth plan with end stacks.
The exterior consists of three storeys and a five-bay front that was originally symmetrical. It has left and right pilasters that are rusticated at the ground floor, with sunk panels on the first floor. A projecting cornice with moulded modillion brackets and a parapet with panelled piers adorn the top. The central deep Tuscan porch has a barrel-vaulted hood with a panelled soffit, which was originally covered in lead but has since been replaced with roofing felt. There is bead-moulding around the outer arch and a lozenge frieze along the inner sides of the porch.
The front door is a two-leaf, six-panel design with a timber fanlight featuring spider's web glazing bars. The ground-floor windows are 12-pane sashes set in round-headed recesses, except for the right window, which has been converted into a door. The first floor has five 12-pane sash windows with sliding Venetian shutters and a continuous cast-iron balcony. The second floor features five 12-pane sash windows with moulded architraves and sill blocks. The right return of the building includes a round-headed stair window. The interior has not been inspected but may retain interesting features.
