Description

The Royal Bank of Scotland is a bank building constructed in 1893 by C R Grittle, who was the chief architect at the National Provincial Bank. It features red brick laid in stretcher bond with sandstone dressings on a grey limestone plinth, and the roof is concealed behind a parapet. The building is designed in the 17th century Artisan Mannerist style.

The structure has three storeys and a symmetrical five-bay front. The ground floor showcases channelled rustication and rusticated quoins. The three central bays above the ground floor are flanked by rusticated pilasters with Ionic capitals, which support an entablature featuring a modillion frieze and a pediment. An oculus with a carved wreath is present in the gable. On the ground floor, there are three round-headed windows in the centre, flanked by a segmental-headed window on the left and a segmental-headed doorway with a fanlight on the right. The first-floor windows are adorned with moulded, eared architraves, segmental heads, and triple keystones, and they are fitted with 18-pane timber sashes. The second-floor windows have moulded architraves with sill blocks, and the outer windows feature cornices above sunk panels.

Inside, the banking hall retains some original features, while the upper floors have not been inspected but may also contain interesting elements.
