Description
Lloyds Bank is a bank building dating from around 1900, located on an important corner site at the end of Vaughan Parade, facing Fleet Street. It features fine sandstone ashlar on a local grey rock-faced limestone plinth, with a roof concealed behind a balustraded parapet. The building is two storeys high and has a front that is divided into three main sections, with the corner section canted. The bays are separated by giant Corinthian pilasters, topped with an entablature that includes a projecting moulded cornice on brackets, decorated with dentil and egg and dart moulding.
The banking hall at the front has three tripartite windows, each with cornices on consoles and pediments above the central light, while the corner window features a segmental pediment. Above, there are tripartite pilastered windows on the first floor, with sill brackets, and the side lights of the corner window are blind. The centre bay facing Fleet Street is slightly advanced and rusticated, with a doorcase that has a stone hood on moulded brackets beneath a segmental pediment. A similar rusticated bay is found in the centre of the Vaughan Parade elevation, and there are small windows with moulded architraves in the narrow left-hand bay on Vaughan Parade. The Palk Street elevation is styled similarly. All windows are fitted with 2-pane sashes that include margin panes.
Inside, the banking hall features a coffered plaster ceiling. Historically, this site was previously occupied by the Torquay Bank before being taken over by Lloyds in 1900.
